The Howard Hughes Corporation will hold a Pre-Submission Community Meeting on Thursday, October 27, 2011, for the purpose of presenting concept plans and materials to the community regarding the proposed development and the Final Development Plan for Parcels C and D, and Lot 39 in downtown Columbia. This meeting, held in accordance with Section 125 of the Howard County Zoning Regulations, will provide the members of the community with an opportunity to comment and to ask questions.
These three parcels of land are located just west of the mall ring road and east of Broken Land Parkway on the west side of the mall, and the other is north of the mall ring road between Little Patuxent Parkway and the north mall entrance road.

 

Following the process as adopted in the General Plan Amendment approved in February 2010, this meeting is the first step in the public engagement process for redevelopment in downtown Columbia.

On Wednesday, June 1, more than 300 community members turned out at the Spear Center to hear land-use expert and development strategist Chris Leinberger speak about “walkable urbanism” and its positive effect on developing communities. Leinberger brought home that downtown Columbia is primed to become livable, workable and walkable place were residents benefit from a less car-dependent lifestyle. The Howard Hughes Corporation and the Columbia Association partnered to host this event.

21st Century Development Trends: How Will Columbia Measure UP? June 1 @ 7 p.m.

The Columbia Association (CA) and The Howard Hughes Corporation are partnering to present “21st Century Development Trends – How Will Columbia Measure Up?”, a presentation by noted metropolitan land strategist and author Chris Leinberger, on Wednesday, June 1 at 7 p.m. in the Spear Center. Leinberger will speak about the demand for communities that embody “walkable urbanism” and he will share how this and other real estate trends will impact downtown revitalization and other development patterns.

Leinberger is a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institute in Washington, DC; a professor and founding director of the Graduate Real Estate Development Program at the University of Michigan; founding partner of Arcadia Land Company, a new urbanism/transit-oriented development and consulting firm; and president of Locus: Responsible Real Estate Developers and Investors, a political advocacy organization. He is also a noted author and researcher who has published two books, The Option of Urbanism: Investing in a New American Dream and Strategic Planning for Real Estate Companies, as well as contributed to numerous publications, including The Atlantic Monthly and Urban Land magazine. He was voted one of the “Top 100 Urban Thinkers” in 2009 in a poll conducted by Planetizen, an international urban planning and architecture web site, and in 2010 he was awarded the William H.
